I was born and raised in Long Beach, California back in...well, let’s just say a ways back. My parents owned a paint store (Davis Paint Company) in downtown Long Beach and my first job was working Saturdays filling up paint thinner cans. When I became old enough to drive, I was promoted to making deliveries and working the front counter. It was a great experience and I have lots of fond memories.

I graduated from high school at Long Beach Wilson and went on to Long Beach City College. I transferred to California State University at Long Beach (CSULB) and graduated with a degree in Business Administration. During my college years and even for a while after,  I had a painting business (painting houses). My parents had sold the paint store about the same time I graduated from high school. They both obtained their real estate broker’s licenses and opened a small real estate company called Davis and Associates Real Estate (in Long Beach). At the urging of my parents, I went and acquired a real estate (agent’s) license. However, I was still in school and didn’t do much with the license.

Although I enjoyed painting... especially being outdoors and owning my own business, I knew it wasn’t for me. I received computer programming training from Control Data Institute (remember them?) and began my career as a computer programmer. I stayed with computers for about 18 years working for such firms as, EDS, CalFed Savings & Loan, PacifiCare and a few smaller companies. I must say, it was a terrific career... challenging, interesting, and the money wasn’t too bad, either. My parents passed away within a few years of one another. They had a few rental properties that I ended up managing and then sort of as a second job, I started managing rental properties for others.

Somewhere during that time, I got married, moved to Laguna Hills, and had two sons, Bill and Scott. If you’ve known me for any amount of time, you’ve probably also seen my two boys. We were pretty inseparable. I guess now they’d prefer to be called young men (Scott’s in high school and Bill’s at UCLA). They’re truly my pride and joy. Of course, I must say, I’m also very lucky to have a very lovely and loving wife, Kathy. I don’t know how I’d get along without her as she’s always there for me.

Anyway, back to my career...As interesting as working with computers was, by the late 1990s I realized I needed a change. Part of the reason was that I was in management and the challenges were different. I very much liked managing projects but did not enjoy managing people. (I really commend those that have the ability to manage other people. Whew, very stressful.) So, having a little real estate in my blood (remember, both my parents were brokers), I decided to go into selling residential real estate.

I started this part of my real estate career with Coldwell Banker. It’s a very good company and has terrific training for beginning agents. After a while, I was lured over to Barker Real Estate. This was a family owned company and I’d still be working there today if they were still around. However, the owners decided to retire and sold the company to Prudential Real Estate, also a very good company. By this time, however, I was pretty much working independently and working from my home office. I switched over to Realty Benefit which gave me the latitude to run my business as I wanted. Realty Benefit, in Lake Forest, has over 500 agents and is still growing. Although I’m a broker and could open my own office, I prefer working with a company where we can pool ideas and resources.

Well, that’s brings us to today. I’ve enjoyed working in real estate. It’s a nice blend of working with people, managing projects (selling homes), marketing, and I still get to play around with computers (like putting together this website). I can’t imagine doing any other type of work.
